John Tinnelly & Sons Ltd - the Importance of an EMS
|
John Tinnelly and Son based in Newry were established in 1959. This business is active today in markets which include demolition and dismantling, asbestos removal, façade retention, metal recycling and architectural salvage.
Michael Canavan from John Tinnelly and Sons Ltd explains the importance of having an Environmental Management System (EMS);
“As a company involved in environmental activities, this accreditation is important, especially when tendering for work. One of the first three questions in the tendering process asks if we have approval for our environmental systems; without that, we wouldn’t get the work, so from that point of view alone it has been invaluable.”
“Having the BS 8555 Environmental Management System accreditation opened the way for us to go forward to achieve ISO 14001; we would never have achieved that without being involved in the STEM Project.”

McQuaid's Quarry Take Environmental Responsibility Seriously
|
McQuaid's Quarry suupplies aggregates to customers such as local councils and contractors across the North Monaghan area. Director Mary McQuaid explains the reasons for joining the STEM Project "We have all become aware of the environment and the need to reduce our waste and that was one of the main reasons we joined the STEM Project. There is more legislation on the way and we want to have a head start in complying with any new regulations".
"Quarries are naturally dusty and noisy with vehicle and machinery emissions addding to the mix, but there have been a lot of improvements in recent years and undertaking this programme (STEM Project) will further enhance those. It has already made us more aware of how we can reduce our waste - and even to cut machinery emissions by doing preventative maintenance to keep the plant in optimum working condition."
"Having an EMS (Environmental Management System) in place will also serve to illustrate that we do take our responsibilities seriously and that we are working to lessen our impact on the surrounding environment". |
