Following the successful conclusion of the STEM Project in June 2008, Southern Group Environmental Health Committee would like to congratulate all of the businesses from the East Border Region of Councils who took part in the project. During the four years of the project there have been many success stories.
234 Companies achieved external certification to BS8555 (Phase 3) or ISO14001
An additional 53 business implemented an internal Environmental Management System (EMS) but did not seek certification (287 in total with an EMS)
316 Local companies underwent a detailed Baseline Environmental Assessment (BEA)
In recognition of their contribution towards Sustainable Development, improving the environment and increasing the competitiveness of local SMEs the STEM Project has won a number of awards.

· Northern Ireland National Training Award (2007)
· Invest NI Small Business Training Award (2007)
· Leadership in Sustainable Development (2006)
· Green Apple Award (2006)
· William Johnston Award for Best Local Government Project of the Year (Runner-up 2006)
Recruitment for the STEM Project Officially Closed in June 2008.
However, Southern Group Environmental Health Committee and the STEM Project intend to build upon their successes with a second project (subject to funding) in 2009.
