National Honours for Local Initiative – STEM Project! Representatives from the STEM Project were honoured for their environmental achievements, and presented with their Green Hero’s Wall Shield at an illustrious ceremony recently inLondon. Winners were presented with their trophies at Kensington Roof Gardens where they were entertained and awarded by TV Botanist Professor David Bellamy OBE.
The STEM Project provides businesses with help and advice to implement a certified Environmental Management System (EMS). The STEM Team provide the technical knowledge and experience necessary to implement and manage theEMS within the business and its operational environment. Commenting on the success, the judges said “Creation of the STEM Project for sustainable environmental management has allowed over 200 small businesses inIreland to drive towards BS8555 or ISO 14001. Many of them would never have been able to initiate such an environmentally effective system without this initiative. “ This is the thirteenth year of the Green Apple Awards, now established as one of the biggest environmental award schemes in the world. The organisers invite entries from any council, company, community or country that is making an effort to protect or enhance the environment, with categories to cover every sector of commerce, industry and local government. There were almost 1,000 entries this year! Eileen Campbell, Business Support Manager from Southern Group Environmental Health Committee was delighted with the achievement. “This award clearly illustrated the benefits of the work of the STEM Team. Our officers have worked very hard over the past three years with over 200 businesses to implement Environmental Management Systems in businesses across all sectors of industry from small scale retail businesses through to large scale production plants. I am delighted with this achievement and will be honoured to place it along with our many other prestigious awards!” |

Green Changes at Crossgar Foodservice
Crossgar Foodservice has recently been awarded the BS8555 Environmental Management Standard. Crossgar Foodservice took part in the STEM Project, an environmental project which helps small businesses address issues of waste management, environmental legislation compliance and resource efficiency. Crossgar Foodservice is a one-stop service for the catering sector throughout theisland ofIreland, providing a range of high quality ambient, chilled, frozen and non-food products. The waste management system involves separating waste and recycling. This system should help the company achieve their objective of reducing waste to landfill by 10% in June 2008. Crossgar Foodservice has also embarked upon a number of initiatives to help them reduce their carbon footprint through a process of continual improvement. Already staff at Crossgar Foodservice are preparing themselves to take the learning’s from BS8555 a step further and embark upon the ISO 14001 European Environmental Management Standard. Jonathan Campbell from Crossgar Foodservice is delighted with this achievement commenting “As a service provider throughoutIreland we need to meet our varied customer requirements. Environmental issues are very important and it is vital that we can illustrate to our customers that we are playing our part in protecting the local environment through our waste management and continuous improvement programme.
